Leaving Chipping Norton, along the Churchill Road, the magnificent tower of All Saints’ church soon comes into view. This is a replica of Magdalen, Oxford and is a much loved local landmark in the area surrounding Churchill.

The village itself is not so picturesque as many nearby beauty spots, so the casual visitor may be inclined to drive straight through. However, there is impressive history here. For instance, Warren Hastings was born here in 1732. At the age of 17 he sailed for India. During a colourful and, at times, tempestuous career there, he became the first Governor-General of India in 1773. After several more years he returned to England and finished his days at nearby Daylesford, where he died in 1818. There is a commemorative plaque on the wall of his birthplace in Hastings Hill.

William Smith, ‘Father of British Geology’, was born here in 1769. One of his many achievements in an illustrious career was the publication of the first geological map of the whole country. He had constructed this entirely without assistance and it is still used today. The Smith Memorial, donated by Earl Ducie, stands centrally in the village.

The handsome fountain is in memory of Squire Langston who died in 1863. He was a great influence in the life of Churchill, responsible for building the church and school. Through him farmhouses, barns and cottages were built or renovated. Neglected land was taken over and cultivated. Evidence of the involvement of the Langston family extends beyond Churchill. Close by is Langston Priory, now a residential home for the elderly. This was formerly the Langston Arms Hotel and its position near to the railway station was a great asset.

The remains of the original church stand at the foot of Hastings Hill. In recent years much work has been done to preserve the building. Though not now in use, it is an important link with the past.

The Methodist chapel in Kingham Road, completed in 1927, is on land given by Mrs Crudge. The chapel has been refurbished in recent years, with general amenities greatly improved. There is a very good relationship between church and chapel and joint services are always well attended.
