OGRES V - Kirtlington - Autumn 2006

A good turnout of 35 brave Ogres strode defiantly onto the moist turf of Kirtlington to do battle for the coveted Claret Jug. The field was missing some old favourites, but included some very welcome fresh virgin OGRES with high hopes and boasting low handicaps. Records were broken, but in the end, the day belonging to the reigning champion Marc 'the boy' Coombes - the first man ever to retain the coveted trophy.  Flushed with his success, the boy immediately offered to cut his handicap by two strokes and therefore, failed to beat his own previous OGRES record of 42 points.

With howling gales and driving rain, an early start was a clear advantage, skilfully grabbed by team 1 winners Messrs. Coombes, Sutton, Daughton & Upright with 88 points.

Team Marshall & Galpin trailed at the rear and suffered the shame of being awarded the new 'I had a Mare' prize. Apparently, they stopped to buy water-proofs, but forgot to pack their night vision glasses and had to play the last five holes in the dark. If this shame were not enough, Simon 'Bertie' Bassett smashed the long standing record proudly held by Ian 'Caesar' Cassertari for most golf with a stunning 9 points.

The foul weather brought out some sterling performances, notably from second placed man Mathew 'The Welshman' Westcott who came in over handicap with 38 playing from 12.

Other strong performances came from Richard 'the removal man' Pickford, Simon 'black' Berry and Stuart 'I'll get round to sorting out Marshalls new lease just as soon as I can fit it in around my various golf games' Palmer - all scoring 35 points.

An out of sorts Mike 'the bully boy' Barker failed again to crack the longest drive, which was grabbed by a new local hero Jon 'Go' Carter.

A special mention is due to James 'gessa the price' Gesner, not for his creditable 32 from a handicap of 5, or his team Lester's great 86, but for his yellow techno trousers. Not since 'Rocket' Ron Peat's pink Pringle has OGRES witnessed such stunning apparel. We are already looking forward to Gezza's spring collection.

Suffice to say that The Blue Riband prize - nearest the pin - was won by a player of great skill and modesty. This was probably the finest iron shot ever played in OGRES, which saw the ball dig in and spin back to within a gnats whisker of the hole - a truly awesome achievement! The mystery man responsible for this great skill slipped quietly away into the night leaving others to ponder and heap praise on his incredible achievement - something which we may never see the like of again?

We will do it all again in the Spring. However, if you are bored in the long winter months, download the OGRES crazy golf game (it's in Excel).

Regards

Richard
