The Oxfordshire Real Estate Golf Society Inaugural fixture - 7th October 2004 - Drayton Park, Drayton.
31 ogres and one ogress braved bright sunshine, warm temperatures and light winds for the inaugural OGRES fixture. As usual, Drayton played well and proved to be a tricky course with plenty of trouble awaiting the unwary. Despite generous scoring allowances and great conditions, only two players managed to score over 36, dispelling any talk of banditry.
The day belonged to
one man - Ron (The Rocket) Peet. Fuelled by his super-size Snickers bar and
sporting a day-glow Pringle sweater, Rocket Ron tore up the course failing to
score on only one hole (when he drank the slightly warm and salty Marshalls
water).Several others
tried and failed to live with The Rocket - One of the anti post favourites, Martyn (housewife's choice) Cox flattered to deceive, driving the green on
the first, but fading away in the latter stages, no doubt dist Matthew (what's the name of that secretary in your office?) Westcott, scored a fine 36, as did Damien (where are the buggy's?) Leahy. Damien blobbed the first, still whingeing about having to buy a trolley for £35.00. However, powered on by the lager stashed in his bag, he could have won, save for blobs on the third and fifteenth. Second placed man Stuart (the love machine) Wallsworth, had a great day with a fine 37. His 25 on the inward nine was easily the best. The out nine at Drayton is always thought to be harder - several players managed 18's, but Mark (something of the night) Griggs kept out of trouble, scored on all the holes and managed a solid 19.
Special mentions: Chris (trust me) Howell-Jones and Tom (I should be good at golf - I don't do any real work) Barton for scoring par on the very difficult fifth. Nicky (I enjoyed playing a round with 31 men) Gregg - 34 points. Mike (this Turkish low cost endowment policy is just what you need) Barker - longest drive. Jerry (this Iraqi low cost endowment policy is just what you need) May - nearest the pin. Guy (ex SAS) Glover and Luke (I work too hard which is why I can't play golf) Warner - scrapping hard for the most golf prize, Luke eventually winning out with a magnificent 12. Thanks to: Drayton for providing an excellent venue. Martin (I'm Welsh you Know) Wells for not eating all of the super-size Snickers. Emily and Jaqui (we enjoyed our large portions of meat and two veg) for providing much needed glamour to the proceedings.
We hope to do it all again next spring - please e-mail with suggestions and spread the word - the more players the better. Richard FULL RESULTS Four ball Stableford - best three score each hole - full handicaps
